NATIONAL DESK: The blast at Mekurai Nayapara village in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj is not an extremist activity. It is from an abandoned mortar shell in 1971.

This was informed at a press conference at Gaibandha Police Super Office at 12:15 pm on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police Touhidul Islam told a news conference that the blast was not an extremist act. It is from an abandoned mortar shell of ’71.

Earlier, the bomb disposal team of the Terrorism Unit from Dhaka entered the house at around 9 am on Thursday. An eight-member team led by ADC Rahmat Ullah conducted investigations in different rooms of the house. After the group entered the house, the people in the vicinity were evacuated to a safe place around 10:30 am. After that, part of the abandoned mortar shell was recovered from the house and an explosion took place.

Earlier, three people were killed in an explosion at Mekurai Nayapara village in Kamardaha union of the upazila around 4pm on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Borhan Uddin, 38, son of Qasim Ali of Mekurai Nayapara village under Kamardaha union, Wahedul Islam, 32, son of late Kabir Uddin of the same village and Rana, 29, son of Tayyab Ali of Kumiradanga village under Mahimaganj union.
